VATSIM P. R. China Division Statement on Spratly Islands Group Flight Incident
OFFICIAL STATEMENT
VATSIM People’s Republic of China Division (VATPRC) is shocked by the news that a VATSIM pilot belonging to our division utilized the military callsign of PLA708 and conducted military activities within WSJC Singapore FIR and VVTS Ho Chi Minh FIR, outside of VATPRC airspace. We later learned that this is a result of 10 pilots flying civilian aircraft with improper flight plans into the South China Sea, and a few aircraft which resemble military ones from another division responded by approaching the civilian aircraft.
While we are deeply sorry that this happened, we do want to clarify a few key aspects. First of all, VATPRC is in no way involved in this group flight, and did not promote or endorse this flight. It is solely organized and conducted by the pilots. Like all divisions of VATSIM, VATPRC is not involved in any political or military disputes in the real world. Secondly, regarding to claims that one of our controllers tried to control a facility on the South China Sea and that airspace is within Singapore Radar’s jurisdiction, we have checked VATSIM Statistics Center and found that neither the named controller, nor any controller on VATSIM, has controlled any position related to the Spratly Islands.
Again, we are sorry for any inconveniences this may have caused to other divisions. We will spare no effort in increasing the awareness regarding codes and regulations of VATSIM and related airspaces among our pilots, and prevent such incidents from occurring again in the future.
